dr. donald outland

Planning and Research: Dr. Donald E. Outland, Chairman. Dr. Outland, an associate professor and former chairperson of the Department of Community Planning and Urban Studies at Alabama A&M University in Huntsville, Alabama, ascended through the ranks to director of planning at East Alabama, Regional Planning and Development Commission in Anniston, Alabama where he authored more than 40 plans and attracted millions in funded grant proposals. By 1977, he completed all requirements for the Ph.D. in administration and planning except the dissertation, and returned to his Alma Mater to chair its Department of Community planning and Urban Studies.

Under Dr. Outland‘s leadership, the department gained the distinction of becoming one of ten universities in the United States and Canada with both bachelors and masters degree programs accredited. He established the Center for Urban and Rural Research and in 1995, he collaborated with officials at the Alabama Department of Community Affairs, and others to establish a Public/Private Academic Partnership (P/PAP) to promote Alabama coastal management planning and implementation of the state plan for economic development. He led a GIS technology transfer initiative under a memorandum of cooperation between the state of Alabama's Science, Energy and Technology Division and Oak Ridge Operations intended to employ current technology to facilitate development and redevelopment in Alabama. He continues work on the application of current and emerging technology toward the end of achieving sustainable development in urban and rural communities in Alabama and the Southeast.

dr. george grayson

Business Development: Dr. George W. Grayson, Vice Chairman. Dr. Grayson is the President /Owner of GWA in Huntsville, Alabama. His company installs, monitors, and updates systems that purify and control indoor air quality. The company has contracts with several businesses and industries, including Alabama A&M University.

Dr. Grayson served as the Chairman of the Department of Biology at Alabama A&M University in Huntsville, Alabama from 1977 to 1993. Prior to his appointment, he served as Assistant Principal with Tennessee Valley High School (Hillsboro, AL) in 1968, Biology Instructor (Alabama A&M) from 1968 to 1971, Assistant Professor of Biology (Alabama A&M) from 1974 to 1976, and Associate Professor of Biology (Alabama A&M) from 1976 to 1977.

Dr. Grayson earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Biology in 1965 and his Master of Science Degree in Biology and Counseling in 1968 from Alabama A&M. He earned his Ph.D. in Cytogenetics and Cytology in 1976 from Vanderbilt University. Between 1969 and 1978, he attended several science and project management workshops/conferences throughout the country. He has also authored and co-authored several publications.

Environmental Project Management: Dr. Jacob Savage. Dr. Savage is an internationally and domestic renowned Microbial Biochemist, innovative, environmental executive leader, lecturer, and chief executive of an environmental corporation. His fields of specialty include environmental property assessment, environmental abatement, environmental carcinogenic and mutagenic testing, fermentation technology, enzyme engineering, food technology, and biomedical engineering. Dr. Savage has over twenty years of leadership experience in environmental related projects including serving as Program Director of numerous governmental and private enterprise programs. Dr. Savage focuses innovative low cost economic alternative strategies for benefiting mankind and improving our society.

dr. rather brown

Environmental Project Management: Dr. Rather G. Brown, Secretary. Dr. Brown attended Alabama A&M University and received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry/Mathematics in 1959. Shortly after graduation, he taught science and math at the secondary level in Lawrence County, Alabama for three years. He then received an AYI Fellowship to A&T State University in Greensboro, North Carolina, where he received a Master of Science degree in Biology Education in 1965. Since the fall of 1970 he has been with the Department of Biology at Alabama A&M University and is currently a professor of Biology. In 1972, he took academic leave to pursue the Doctor or Philology degree in the Department of Biology/Environmental Science at The American University in Washington DC. He received the Ph.D. in May 1976.

Since returning to Alabama A&M, Dr. Brown has been instrumental in getting more than 1.3 million dollars in funded research grants form NIH, NSF, EPA, NASA, EMCON, ACHE, etc. Of the funded research, 1.2 million dollars was for the MARC (Minority Access to Research Careers) program where he was director for ten years. Dr. Brown is co-author of more than 25 published articles in journals with MARC fellows. He provided research opportunities for more that 25 high school students. Dr. Brown has also directed/supervised research in Environmental Science with the EMCON program for six junior/senior college students, sponsored ten EPA fellows, and sponsored 15 NASA fellows.

Dr. Brown has research experience in chemical toxicology, radon detection/analysis, water pollution, soil biodegradation, and bioremediation. He has also attended and participated in many local, state, national, and international workshops/conferences on global environmental pollution, environmental technology transfer, and more.

dr. robert h. bullard

Environmental Justice Research: Dr. Robert H. Bullard. Dr. Bullard is a professor of sociology at Clark Atlanta University and the director of the Environmental Justice Resource Center (EJRC) at the university. He is one of the leading authorities in the nation regarding environmental justice, and has written or edited several books on the issue, including Dumping in Dixie: Race, Class and Environmental Quality; Unequal Protection: Environmental Justice and Communities of Color; and Confronting Environmental Racism: Voices from the Grassroots. More significantly, he has played a major role in organizing and mobilizing the environmental justice movement over the past two decades.

The EJRC is a comprehensive university-based center dedicated to education, research, and service. Founded in 1994 at Clark Atlanta University in Atlanta, Georgia-the "capital" of the South-the EJRC has built a solid national and international reputation in a number of fields, including environmental and economic justice, environmental racism, land use and industrial facility permitting, brownfields redevelopment, community health, transportation equity, suburban sprawl, and smart growth. Through its community-driven research, policy analysis, training initiatives, and forums, the center is reaching a wide range of students, faculty members, and community constituents. EJRC’s work is also impacting the work of nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) as well as governmental agencies and officials.
