Mission Statement
Orthodontics is one of the best methods by which an individual can increase their oral health and self-esteem. Occasionally, orthodontics treats disease such as temporomandibular joint dysfunction. Our patients have made discretionary decisions, which may have been difficult, in order to choose what is “best” for themselves and their children. Obtaining “the best they can” is their goal and providing the best is our purpose.
I feel each patient deserves a thorough evaluation of their face, smile, bite, and jaw joint, because each are interrelated. Whether orthodontic treatment is sought for cosmetic or health reasons, the face and lips can be affected as well as the jaw muscles and jaw joints.
From this evaluation, I present “the treatment plan” or plans which consider the quality of result, length of treatment, patient comfort and how long the results could be expected to remain stable. So much information is now available on the effects of aging on the face, that my orthodontic plan, even for children, considers the immediate changes and what the results will look like in 15, 20, or 30 years.
I do not compromise treatment without the full disclosure of the consequences of such. When you seek the best, and do your best, you can expect the best.
Adult Orthodontics in the 21st Century
When I was in Dental school in the 70’s, the focus of orthodontic treatment was on children and adolescents. Jump ahead 30 years; I now see a significant and growing number of adult patients, including 60-70 year olds. One thing that we emphatically do not say anymore is that orthodontics is strictly for kids!
Why the turnaround? One influential factor is the demand for an attractive smile and face in today’s competitive social and business environment. A massive amount of research in the social psychology journals verifies the importance of facial esthetics. In fact, there is no more crucial life influencing factor than facial appearance. That same body of literature points out that the teeth and smile are second only to the eyes, in significance of psychological impressions formed on the basis of facial appearance. Adult orthodontics can make a decisive contribution to facial attractiveness.
Treatment options for adult orthodontics have advanced significantly from small metal brackets, to ceramic, tooth-colored brackets, to the invisible Invisalign appliances of the 2000’s. Now is a great time for adult orthodontics!
